FAIRFIELD — By now, the annual Bark ’n’ Purr Ball has established its reputation as the ultimate pet project in Butler County.

This year’s fundraiser for the Animal Friends Humane Society runs from 6 to 10 p.m. March 19 at Receptions in Fairfield.

“This is our largest fundraiser, and all the funds go to our lifesaving operations,” said Meg Stephenson, the executive director of the shelter in Hamilton that takes in 8,400 animals a year.

The event, entering its sixth year, raises about $40,000 per year for the shelter, partly through the auctions that take place at the ball. This year’s items range from a print by surreal artist Salvador Dali to an autographed Fender Stratocaster from Eric Clapton. Dinner will be served, and music will be provided by the Thunderbay Band, whose drummer, Rick Fox, is the president of the Animal Friends board.

That band, which has been playing for about 20 years, usually plays at more raucous concerts like Groovin’ on the Green in Fairfield. They have played at all the Bark ’n’ Purrs except one.

“What we’re really doing is providing background dinner music. So if you want to see us do classic rock and do it soft, that’s the place to come,” Fox said with a laugh.

Tickets are $50 per person, which includes dinner, beer and wine. The masters of ceremonies will be Tim and George from Kiss 107. For tickets or more information, call (513) 867-5727.
