Sheriff’s office confirms account of child hit by car in Harrison Twp.

UPDATE @ 8:45 p.m.: The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office confirms that a child, a 4-year-old girl, "darted into the roadway" and into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Republic Drive, sheriff's Sgt. Jeanine Whittaker said in a prepared statement.

The child suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital.

According to the preliminary investigation, a black Pontiac Grand Am was headed south on Embassy Place, then proceeded east on Republic when the child ran into the street. The vehicle was unable to avoid the child, the sergeant said in the statement.

The investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Unit is continuing.

FIRST REPORT

A pedestrian struck in the 2000 block of Republic Drive in Harrison Twp., in the area of the Northland Village Apartments, has been taken to a hospital and witnesses report the victim is a child.

Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies and a medic unit were dispatched just after 6 p.m. Deputies made no statements at the scene, other than to say the incident is under investigation.

James Sain said he was on his porch at a friend’s house when he saw a little girl run into the street. She was launched into the air at least 15 feet, he said.

Sain also said he doesn’t believe the driver saw the girl.

“I was in shock,” he said. “I just witnessed this? It was crazy.”

Sain said the girl’s mother, who was standing nearby when the child ran into traffic, picked up the child and held her.

He said the driver of the car that hit the child stopped immediately. The driver got out of the car, checked on the child, and parked the car, Sain said.

The child’s condition is not known.
