All adoptable dogs now have forever homes following the Furry Black Friday event at the SICSA Pet Adoption Center.

During the event, a total of 39 animals received new homes. The shelter allowed adopters to name their price today.

FIRST REPORT

One of the best deals Black Friday shoppers can get this year is a new furry friend.

“The event is pretty much exactly what it sounds like,” said Jessie Sullivan, director of adoption and placement services. “You get to name your own price.”

With more than 50 cats and dogs available for adoption today, Sullivan hopes they’ll help some animals find their “furrever” homes.

“We have a number who are waiting for homes for the holidays, so we hope to send home as many as we can,” she said. “Some people have anxiety about adopting pets around the holiday thinking they might be gifts or doing promotions like this that we’re just giving animals away. That’s really not the case, we’re still finding quality homes.”

SICSA has a conversation-based adoption process where staff members sit down and talk to potential adopters to determine what pet matches their needs.

“We really sit down with people and talk about what they’re looking for ... and really [find] the best fit for them,” Sullivan said.

Staff also follows up with adopters a week and a month after adoptions to make sure things are going well.

SICSA also encourages adopters reach out if they’re having issues adjusting to their new furry friend.

“If you take a dog home and are having issues, call us,” Sullivan said. “Rather than bring an animal back right away, let us help you work through the problem and see if we can get that animal to stay.”

SICSA also has a cat and dog behavior specialist on staff to help with post-adoption support.

For potential adopters who aren’t quite ready to commit, they can try a “slumber party.”

“It allows you to take an animal home for a night or two without actually committing to the adoption until afterwards,” Sullivan said. “So that can be a nice reassurance for people.”

Furry Black Friday ends at 7 p.m. tonight. Stop by SICSA at 2600 Wilmington Pike in Kettering to find your new furry friend.

The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center is having an adoption special and will waive adoption fees on Saturday.

The event is from noon to 4 p.m. at 6790 Webster St. in Dayton.
