Speed a factor in motorcycle crash in Miami Twp.

UPDATE @ 6 p.m.

Sgt. Jason Kramer of the Miami Twp. Police Department said excessive speed is likely what caused a motorcyclist to go off the roadway at a curve.

Police and medics were called around 4:30 p.m. to a crash near a pond in the 10100 block of Miamisburg-Springboro Road.

"We originally had a report that the motorcycle had gone into the pond, but those callers were not correct," Kramer said. "The motorcycle ran off the road and down toward the pond, but the motorcycle never actually got to the pond.

"When the motorcyclist left the road, it appears he hit the speed limit sign ... and the bike began to tumble and he separated from the motorcycle," Kramer said.

"It's pretty obvious in this situation the motorcyclist was traveling much faster than 45 mph and we'll continue to investigate to determine how fast he was traveling," he said.

The man, whose name and age were not immediately available, is a Miami Twp. resident, Kramer said.

He was wearing a helmet, but it came off because he likely didn't have it secured properly, he said. "If you're going to wear a helmet, it doesn't do you any good unless you wear it properly."
