Sportswear shop to move into former Walgreens

TRENTON — A new business will soon occupy another portion of the former Trenton Walgreens building on State Street.

EAS Sportswear, a screen printing and embroidery service that has been in operation locally since 2007, is preparing to open at 825 W. State St. in mid-February, according to owner Kenny Schlueter. EAS Sportswear will fill approximately 1,200 square feet of space in the building.

Anytime Fitness, a gym franchise that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, opened in April 2011 and takes up approximately 4,000 square feet of space.

“We’ve got the shop done and have been doing some printing already,” Schlueter said. “But we’ve got a little more work to do in the retail area before we open.”

Schlueter said he had been working out of his garage for the last several years.

“We’ve grown about 35 percent every year and just needed a bigger warehouse,” Schlueter said. “Hopefully, being in a retail spot will help us continue to grow.”

The building became available after the Trenton Walgreens opened a new facility at the corner of West State Street and Wayne-Madison Road in 2008.

An additional 4,000 square feet remains available for prospective business opportunities, according to Economic Development Director Jim Foster. There is one business that has expressed interest, he said.

Foster also said the village also has two other empty buildings. One is the former McGee’s IGA and the other is the former Oak Hill Bank. Both are located along West State Street.

“We would like nothing better than to get a grocer in there,” Foster said of the IGA building. “But right now it is difficult to get a commercial bank loan and that means monetarily it’s not going to be easy to get a grocer in there.

“We do have some incentives we can offer a full-service grocer,” he continued. “And I think it would be a tremendous asset to have one. There is no question in my mind the community would support it.”
