A Springfield drug dealer will spend five years in prison after he was found with a significant amount of drugs last year, prosecutors said.

Mahdi Channels, 22, was sentenced for possession of cocaine, receiving stolen property and possessing criminal tools.

Deputies raided Channels’ East High Street Apartment in September and arrested two other people as well.

Inside his apartment, deputies found 63 grams of cocaine, a stolen rifle, $800 and a digital scale.

“For perspective, a Snickers candy bar only weighs about 50 grams,” said Clark County Prosecutor Daniel Driscoll.

Channels arrest was part of a two-month investigation into drug trafficking.

The sheriff’s office also found a 2-year-old in the home, Clark County Sheriff Deb Burchett told our news partners at the Springfield News-Sun.

“There were some weapons just sitting around the area,” the sheriff said. “It’s very dangerous with that child running around. A 2-year-old can pick them up at any time and that’s why children services were called to the scene.”

Burchett said drug crimes are still a top priority for her office.

“When I took over drugs was one of the main things I wanted to work on,” she said. “I am constantly in touch with our drug unit, seeing what they’re doing and buying and they have been doing a very good job.”
