Springfield officer cleared in August fatal shooting

An officer involved in the fatal shooting of a London man has been cleared of charges by a grand jury.

Greg Ivory, a 10-year veteran with the Springfield Police Department, was cleared in the August shooting of Craig Frye Sr., 41.

Police said Frye was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife, Cassandra, 37, and her friend Juan Torres outside a home in the 1700 block of Maiden Lane late Aug. 24. Ivory pulled onto the scene and reportedly saw Frye had a gun pointed at his wife and Torres. Ivory told Frye to drop the weapon; instead Frye pointed the gun at the officer.

“Shots fired! I’ve been hit,” Ivory said in radio traffic obtained by the Springfield News-Sun. “Send a medic, please. I don’t know if he’s been struck or not.”

The gunfight lasted about 38 seconds, police said. Frye was found by officers on North Street in some bushes with the gun still in his hand.

He was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center, where he died shortly after midnight.
