Riverside officers responded to the high school gym at 9:25 p.m. Saturday after receiving a call from the school’s assistant principal reporting a fight at the event, dispatch records show.
A Riverside police report indicated the fight was believed to be between two girls.
Alexander said no weapons were involved during the fight and there were no injuries.
While attendees were exiting the event, police spotted a scuffle by one of the exits. During the scuffle a 17-year-old girl was accused of assaulting a 37-year-old volunteer while the girl was trying to get back into the gymnasium, a police report read.
“It’s unfortunate that students chose to fight at a dance, because homecoming is a happy time,” Alexander said. “We’ve never had this problem.”
According to the district’s website the dance had originally been scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m., however Alexander said administrators decided it was in the best interest to end the event early.
Police said they are presenting the case to the juvenile prosecutor’s office for potential charges that could stem from the original fight.
The student senate is tasked with planning the high school’s homecoming dance and the planning typically takes a year to complete, Alexander said.
