Strangulation risk leads to recall of IKEA blinds

WEST CHESTER TWP. — IKEA has voluntarily recalled more than 3 million roller, Roman and roll-up blinds due to risk of strangulation.

No reported incidents of near-strangulation or death have been reported due to the roll-up and roller blinds, but the Roman blinds are responsible for the near-strangulations of two children and one strangulation of a one-year-old girl in Connecticut.

The recall includes roller blinds that don’t have a tension device attached to the bead chain and all roll-up and Roman blinds. The blinds were sold at IKEA stores from January 1998 through June of 2009 for $5 to $55.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said consumers should stop using the blinds immediately and return them to any IKEA store for a full refund. For additional information, contact IKEA at (888) 966-4532.
