HUBER HEIGHTS SCHOOLS
Even though our new school year has started, over the next few weeks I would like to review the 2009-10 school year highlights from our two middle schools and our high school. This week, I want to look back at the accomplishments of Studebaker Middle School.
Studebaker was built in 1970 and was named after Robert Studebaker, founder of Laserplane (Trimble Engineering and Construction) and former Huber Heights Board of Education member. Currently, the building serves students in grades six through eighth with a total school enrollment of approximately 750 students. Studebaker staff and students began the 2009-2010 school year with the news, based on the results of the Ohio Achievement Tests, their hard work earned an “Excellent” status from the Ohio Department of Education.
The academic achievement of students continued throughout the year with 410 students earning status as Renaissance Scholars. Forty-five seventh graders were inducted into the Torch and Keystone Chapter of the Studebaker National Junior Honor Society. Eighth grader, Derek Kahle, represented Studebaker at the District Spelling Bee and was also the District Champion. Cole Everett won Studebaker’s annual Citizenship Bee. In May, thirty-one students earned the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and fifty-five students attained the Principal’s Honor Roll.
Studebaker staff and students also demonstrated their commitment to community service with various activities throughout the school year. Thousands of dollars were donated from school fundraisers to The American Red Cross, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The Humane Society, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, The Emergency Animal Rescue Service, Children’s Medical Center, For the Love of Children, The Cincinnati Zoo, The American Cancer Society, The Ronald McDonald House, and many other worthy groups and organizations. Studebaker was also honored as the top fund raiser for the annual “Relay for Life,” sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Various service projects included members of the Studebaker Student Council working with staff and students at Valley Forge Elementary and members of the National Junior Honor Society partnering with staff and students at Rushmore and Kitty Hawk Elementary Schools.
I am sure that the hard work of the staff and students of Studebaker Middle School will result in an outstanding 2010-11 school year. I am very proud of their many accomplishments.
