SunCoke Energy selects Illinois for future headquarters

SunCoke Energy has selected the Greater Chicago area as the site of its future headquarters, according to the office of Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.

SunCoke Energy, a division of Sunoco Inc., planned to spinoff from Sunoco the first half of next year. SunCoke produces metallurgical coke to steelmakers such as AK Steel Corp., with which it has a 20-year supply agreement once construction of its Middletown Coke Co. is complete.

SunCoke now is based in Knoxville, Tenn. It is investing $6.6 million to relocate its corporate headquarters from Knoxville to Arboretum Lakes in Lisle, according to Quinn’s office. Illinois is providing a $4.8 million business investment package to support the project that creates 105 new jobs, according to Quinn’s office.

SunCoke also has a manufacturing facility in Granite City, Ill.

Today’s announcement comes less than a month after SunCoke put out an update that its separation from Sunoco might be extended because of outstanding litigation with ArcelorMittal about coke pricing, according to SunCoke.
