Cagwin has been superintendent since 2001. He started in the district in 1983, first splitting his time as assistant principal of Kramer Elementary School and director of special education. He also has worked as principal at Stewart, Marshall and the middle school, and as assistant superintendent from 1997 to 2001.
Cagwin said he made the decision to retire “with mixed emotions,” but is looking forward to spending more time with his wife and family.
“I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work side-by-side with so many outstanding faculty, staff and administrators. I have also had the opportunity to work with many tremendous students, families and community members,” he said. “The Talawanda community certainly has a gem in its public school system.”
Board President Darrell Smith said Cagwin has been a great leader as the district passed bond issues for Bogan and the new Talawanda High School, as it returned to neighborhood schools and through many other ups and downs.
Smith, who called Cagwin and friend and mentor, commended Cagwin by saying he has always done what’s right for the student.
“He has touched the lives of thousands of students in this community in many positive ways,” Smith said.
Smith said the board looks forward to a “seamless transition” as Spivey takes the helm next year. A formal vote on her contract will be forthcoming.
Cagwin said he has the upmost confidence that Spivey is the right person to fill his shoes, with excellent communication skills and enthusiasm, and as someone who has the respect of the district.
“I believe she is the right person to step into this position when I leave,” Cagwin said. “This organization will not lose a step and that’s exciting.
“I can retire knowing that we are on the right track, and that the leadership of the district is in capable and caring hands,” he said.
