Teacher hit by SUV in parking lot

Teacher suffered minor injuries after being struck.

LIBERTY TWP. — A Cherokee Elementary teacher was treated for minor injuries Thursday after being struck by a vehicle in the school’s parking lot.

Around 9:15 a.m., a 58-year-old male teacher — whose name was not released — was struck by Craig Schmidt, 41, of Poets Way in Liberty Twp. while in the parking lot.

Schmidt left the scene but was quickly spotted by responding deputies from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office after witnesses provided a vehicle description, according to the sheriff’s office. Schmidt was stopped near Ohio 747 and Hamilton Mason Road.

Schmidt was charged with reckless operation and negligent assault.

The teacher was directing traffic when he was hit, according to the release.

He was treated at the scene and taken to West Chester Hospital as a precaution, according to a release issued by the district.

Schmidt pulled out of his parking spot after taking his child into school and a side view mirror hit the teacher, spinning him around and knocking him to the ground, according to the news release.

Due to busing cuts, students living within two miles of the school must find alternative transportation, including having their parents drive them to school, participating in carpools or riding their bicycles, according to the school district.

Because of increased traffic, the school’s staff is asked to assist in directing traffic.

A letter was sent out to parents following the incident, reminding them to take notice of safety precautions.

The district is reminding parents to stay off cell phones in the parking lot, have their children wear rain ponchos instead of carrying an umbrella, not allow children to walk across the parking lot by themselves and keep their eyes on the road instead of watching their child enter the building.
