Teen accused in deadly shooting of Dunbar student initially denied being shooter, records show

The 18-year-old Mason man facing murder and felonious assault charges denied shooting and killing a Dunbar High School freshman when he was interviewed by police the next day, court records read.

Jackeem Collins, 18, faces two counts of murder, six counts of felonious assault and a weapon charge for the shooting death of Qua’lek Shelton last month.

“After a second interview...Collins confessed to being the lone shooter,” a court affidavit read. “Additionally, we spoke to another occupant of the car who stated that he saw Collins shoot.”

According to court records, Collins with seated inside a Saturn Vue Feb. 16 when he fired multiple rounds into a group of juveniles.

Shelton was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.  A second victim was hit in the leg during the shooting.

Police said four other people in the group of juveniles were not hit by the  gunfire.

Investigators also are still looking for a second 18-year-old in connection to the shooting.

Police said they are hoping to speak with Malakhy McCain.
