6 teens injured in Miami County crash were traveling '70 to 80 mph'

MIAMI COUNTY, Ohio — All six teenagers involved in a single-car crash near Covington on Friday night were treated and released from Upper Valley Medical Center, hospital officials said this morning, Jan. 23.

Miami County sheriff’s deputies said the driver of the car, Cassie Cook, 16, of Laura was talking and did not see the approaching stop sign at the intersection of Meyers and Rench roads and continued on into a farm field about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

A deputy estimated the speed of the mid-size car, with six teenagers crammed inside, at “70 to 80 miles per hour.” A written statement from a passenger in the car said “we were laughing and having a good time” prior to the crash.

After the car ended up in the field, five passengers exited the car and the sixth tried to drive it out of the field but instead rolled it on its side in a creek, where it came to a stop in 2 to 3 feet of water.

The passengers were identified as Paige Harner, 16, of West Milton; Kyle Plantz, 19, of Troy; Nicholas Brown, 16, of Troy; Sarah Dubent, 16, of Troy, and Zachary Crump of Troy.
