5 things not to miss at the Greene County Fair

If you're looking for hours of family fun at a great value this summer, head on over to the Greene County Fair, held Sunday, July 29, to Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Greene County Fairgrounds & Expo Center (120 Fairground Road, Xenia). The fair opens at 8 a.m. each day and closes when the entertainment ends for the night, typically around 10 p.m.

“It’s a family fun event for mom and dad, and grandparents and kids to get out and enjoy something together,” said Dan Bullen, director of the Greene County Fair.

With food, rides, agriculture, exhibits and a headliner country concert this year, there really is something for everyone.

Check out the top five reasons to visit the Greene County Fair this year:

1. LANCO in concert: Without a doubt, the best part of this year's fair will be the country concert at the grandstand on Tuesday, July 31, at 7 p.m. Featuring LANCO, with special guest Jordan Davis, tickets can be purchased for $25 to $30 and include fair admission. Known as more of a crossover band, these country artists appeal to a wider audience than traditional country musicians. In addition to their No. 1 country hit, "Greatest Love Story,' they also hit No. 20 on the pop chart.

2. Lots of fun for a little money: Admission tickets are just $6, and children 9 and under can get in for free. In addition to this incredible value, the fair boasts three discount days. Monday, July 30, is military discount day; with a military ID, admission is just $3. Wednesday, Aug. 1, is family day, when admission is just $3 with a donation of a nonperishable food item. Thursday, Aug. 2, is senior day, and seniors can enter for just $3.

3. Fair food: "We've got it all," Bullen said. "You have your traditional funnel cakes, cotton candy and candy apples. Then we have our Greene County cattleman selling ribeye steaks and local pork chops. There's also the gamut of Philly cheese steak sandwiches, Italian sausages and gyros."

This year’s fair food will include a twist on a traditional favorite: the deep-fried pickle dog. A pickle is hollowed out, stuffed with a hot dog, and then dipped in corndog batter and deep fried. “It’s really good,” Bullen said. “The thing is huge. You’ve got to have a big pickle to put a hot dog inside!”

4. Rides and entertainment: It used to be that carnival rides were of two types: kiddie rides for the young ones and major rides for bigger kids and kids-at-heart. Now the rides are more family-friendly, with options that allow young children and parents to enjoy them side-by-side. The rides will be available on Monday through Thursday, starting at 4 p.m. each day, and on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. You'll be able to buy individual ride tickets or unlimited ride wristbands.

If carnival rides aren't for you, be sure to check out the grandstand events, featuring the demolition derby on Monday, July 30, at 8 p.m. and tractor pulls on Friday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. And you won't want to miss the newest addition to the entertainment lineup, the High Flying Pages, a thrilling show that features a trapeze act, a giant swing, and motorcycles flying around the Globe of Death. Of course, there will still be racing pigs and a parakeet encounter, all free with a paid fair admission.

5. Agriculture and exhibits: "We are here to promote agriculture, so you can bring your family and see numerous different types of animals," Bullen said about the 4-H and junior fair programs. In addition, there is a fine arts exhibit and the horticulture and flower show that is rumored to have big changes this year.

For just $6 you can experience endless entertainment, food, rides and family fun all in one place. Free public parking is available outside the gates, adjacent to the fairgrounds. Bring a friend or the whole family, and enjoy summer fun at the Greene County Fair
