Final pretrial hearing scheduled for man accused in Greene County double homicide

XENIA — The final pretrial hearing for Bret Merrick, one of two brothers arrested in connection to the murder of two people outside Yellow Springs, has been moved to September.

The final pretrial hearing date was scheduled during a Greene County Common Pleas Court hearing Thursday morning.

A date for a jury trial has not been finalized at this time.

  • Bret Merrick and Dustin Merrick are facing several charges including aggravated murder and murder.
  • William "Skip" Brown and Sherri Mendenhall were shot to death Jan. 15.
  • Brown and Mendenhall were neighbors with the Merrick brothers.

Bret Merrick is facing the death penalty for his alleged involvement in Brown and Mendenhall’s murders.

Prosecutors say Dustin worked for Brown, but the they parted ways last fall.

An indictment read by a judge in court on Thursday identified Dustin Merrick as the shooter.
