Two local post offices may close

Postal Service says the Centerville Station and Station B in Dayton will remain under review.

DAYTON — The U.S. Postal Service has whittled down from five to two the number of Dayton-area branches being considered for closure in a cost-cutting move.

The Postal Service on Friday, Jan. 29, filed an update with the Postal Regulatory Commission indicating that 162 offices remain under review including the Centerville Station, 99 Maple St. and Station B, 10 N. Williams St., in Dayton.

Three area branches that have been reviewed and will remain open. They are Dayton’s Mid City Station, 36 N. Ludlow St.; the Airway Station, 4924 Airway Road; and, the Veterans Administration branch, 4100 W. Third St.

The review process that began last summer initially examined about 3,300 stations and branches in urban and suburban areas, focusing on facilities in close proximity to one another where consolidations might be feasible, according to a Postal Service press release.

“Consumer behavior is changing. It is important for the Postal Service to adjust to the shift,” Dean Granholm, vice president of delivery and Post Office operations, said.

No date has been set to conclude the review process. Once the final list is announced, it will take a minimum of 60 days to close down offices, said Greg Frey, a Postal Service spokesman.
