Wapak apartment fire forces residents out

No one was injured Friday night in a fire at an apartment complex on Ashland Avenue that forced the occupants into the parking lot.

Investigators are still looking to pin down the reason for the fire and have listed the cause as undetermined, said Capt. Jeff Orphal, Wapakoneta Fire and EMS.

Crews dispatched at 6:23 p.m. to the Normandy Ridge Apartments, 402 Ashland Ave., found heavy smoke coming from a second-floor apartment facing the parking lot, Orphal said.

Firefighters entered the unit and found open flames just inside the door. The woman who lived there had just left to go to a store, Orphal said.

One of the occupants knocked on several doors to alert residents in the 12 other apartments in the building. At least 10 of the units were occupied and everybody escaped safely, Orphal said.

The fire was placed under control at 6:54 p.m.

The building were the fire occurred is one of eight in the complex. Each building has three floors.

Orphal offered no dollar estimate on damage because the investigation is continuing.

The Botkins Fire Department, in Shelby County, offered mutual aid in fighting the fire, Orphal said.
