Weekend garage sale helps fund local medical outreach program

Agency’s work with low-income residents also receives grants and donations.

HAMILTON — When Dee Jack LeFevers was homeless and unemployed he didn’t know how he was going to pay for his heart medication.

“I had lost my job and had no money to get anything,” said LeFevers, 53, who has suffered two heart attacks and takes prescription drugs that cost $7 a pill.

He received help from Mercy Franciscan at St. Raphael’s Medical Outreach Program.

The agency largely funded by local grants and donations will host a garage sale this weekend to raise funds to help low-income residents pay for prescription drugs.

The garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 24, and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at Disciples Christian Church, 3401 Hamilton-Mason Road in Fairfield Twp.

Last year, the nonprofit agency and the church raised more than $2,200 by hosting a garage sale and helped hundreds of homeless residents and others who qualify for assistance.

“I had hoped we would raise $500. I never dreamed we would raise that much money,” said Lynn Adams, a member of the church who coordinates the garage sale.

Tami Adams, outreach nurse at Mercy Franciscan at St. Raphael in Hamilton, said the agency helps about 900 residents annually and the need continues to grow.

“We’ve had an increase of people who are saying, ‘I’ve never had to get help before.’ We’ve got people who were employed and have lost their jobs. It’s brand new people who have never needed this kind of help and don’t know what to do,” Adams said.

Adams said every dollar helps the agency manage the health of many who would skip treatment if not for the medical outreach program.

“We’re helping people with diabetes, hypertension, asthma and any of these illnesses could be life-threatening,” Adams said.
