Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley spoke outside of Ned Pepper’s bar Tuesday afternoon to give an updated statement on the Oregon District shooting.

The statement came about an hour after Governor DeWine delivered his gun reform proposal, which included red flag laws, and moments after it was confirmed that President Trump would visit Dayton on Wednesday.

“I have no sense of what’s in President Trump’s mind at all; I can only hope that as president of the United States, he’s coming here because he wants to add value to our community and he recognizes that that is what our community needs,” the mayor said.

In response to DeWine’s proposal, she provided these words: “We need to start working and moving towards that direction, and I think Governor DeWine has done that.”

She also added, “He has been very clear. We had a discussion last night about it, and he said ‘I don’t know if these things would’ve changed Dayton,’ but I think Dayton happening has changed his movements on some of these things.”
