A major ruling could mean a new requirement for millions of Americans.

A federal judge says women should have to register for the draft.

News Center 7's Sean Cudahy talked with the people who might have to go to war one day.

Right now, all men ages 18 to 25, except for some special circumstances, have to register for the draft. Now, a judge says that should include women too.

University of Dayton student Amber Back says she’s glad to hear women may soon be required to register for the draft.

“I think we all deserve a chance,” she said. “Equal rights and women are just as capable as fighting as men are.”

This is part of the reason for the judge’s ruling on Friday in Houston, Texas. The judge says a lot has changed since the current law went on the books and since the U.S. Department of Defense lifted the ban in 2013 on women serving in combat.

One woman says she doesn’t like the ruling because she doesn’t like the draft in the first place.

“I don’t think men should register to do it so I wouldn’t think women should have to do it,” said Alexis Wroblewski.

Back says she wouldn’t mind registering for the draft.

“I wouldn’t mind having to register because I think it’s fair that everyone has a chance to register,” she said.
