MIDDLETOWN — A local woman opened her own quilt shop to sell material, kits and patterns to fellow quilters.
Michelle Harney fills a void for independent quilt shops in Middletown, opening Complete Quilting July 15.
Harney was able to open her own quilt business after her mother Elaine Hall closed her Fairfield quilt shop in June after more than five years. Once she was sure her mother was serious about closing, Harney quit her job of 13 years in information technology to open Complete Quilting, using the supplies from the Fairfield shop The Bramble Patch to get started.
The store is located next to Kidd Coffee at 6585 Terhune Drive.
“We can help them with all phases of quilting, with learning how to do it and finishing up their quilt,” she said.
The mother of three said she hopes to expand quilting classes for beginning sewing, using hand guided quilt machines and quilt classes such as block of the month and piecing classes. She will take orders for quilting tops, taking the quilt tops people piece together from fabric and quilting together the top with the batting and backing. Customers also may rent quilt machines to do it themselves, she said.
Harney also is a sales representative of Gammill quilt machines, which will be part of her business, as well as online sales she hopes to garner selling quilt kits that include material and patterns.
Quilting is good for your mind, she said, and results in something the quilter can enjoy or use as a gift.
“I’ll be successful when I have employees,” she said. “I think I’ve got a good start though and a good foundation, thanks to my mom.”
