CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The other shoe has dropped in Saturday's basketball brawl at the end of the Cincinnati-Xavier game.
Four players from each team have been suspended by the schools with Cincinnati handing out harsher punishments to their players involved.
Bearcat forward Yancy Gates got a six-game suspension for throwing punches during the bench-clearing fracas with No. 8 Xavier in the final second minute of their annual crosstown matchup.
Gates punched Xavier's Kenny Frease in the face, causing a nasty gash below his left eye, and hit at least one other Musketeer during the fight, which prompted the referees to call Xavier's 76-53 win with 9.4 seconds left.
The Bearcats also gave Cheikh Mbodj and Octavius Ellis six-game suspensions. Ge'Lawn Guyn was suspended for one game.
Xavier suspended point guard Tu Holloway for one game, guard Mark Lyons for two games, and Dez Wells and Landen Amos for four games each.
In his post game news conference, Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin was clearly disturbed by the incident and his players' role in it. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Cronin says the four Bearcat players will have to apologize to he university, the city and the kids who watch them play before they'll be able to suit up again for his team.
Xavier Athletic Director Mike Bobinski used the words "embarrassing and disappointing" regarding his teams conduct, which was made worse in a post-game news conference when Holloway talked about his own team being gangsters. He later apologized for his remarks.
Cincinnati plays at Wright State Wednesday night and will have just eight scholarship players available.
