Looking back at the 2013 Halloween Tornadoes

On this date last year, strong storms moved through the region that produced two tornadoes.

The first touched down in a populated area east of downtown Vandalia at about 11:30 P.M. It had winds estimated between 100-110 MPH and was on the ground for just over half a mile. It leveled one commercial building and caused major damage to a Frickers’ restaurant where 8 people were inside.

It then hit a subdivision, destroying three homes and damaging several others. The storm also toppled vehicles, knocked down trees and power poles.

Less than 10 minutes later, a weaker tornado touched down in rural Miami County destroying one barn and damaging another. No serious injuries were reported with either tornado.
