Man arrested in Preble County shooting death

A 48-year-old Preble County man was shot and killed in his home Friday morning and police arrested a young man who identified himself as the son of the victim’s girlfriend.

Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson identified the deceased as Jerry D. Mason, 48, of 5877 E. Lexington Road near Eaton.

Tyler Smith, 22, was arrested shortly after the shooting and booked into the Preble County Jail pending a murder charge just before 9 a.m.

Deputies responded to Mason's home around 6:15 a.m after receiving a 911 call from Smith.

During that call Smith told a dispatcher he had just done something bad and needs to go to jail. He can be heard telling the dispatcher that his mother’s boyfriend is dead and then says, “I shot him.” When asked what he shot him with he says a shotgun.

When deputies arrived at the house they discovered Mason’s body in the living room.

Sheriff Simpson said they are still investigating what led up to the deadly shooting. He confirmed that three people live in the home, including Smith and Mason.

They are speaking with the third resident, a woman, who was not home at the time of the shooting.
