Man Indicted After Allegedly Striking Piqua StateTrooper

A Minster man is facing criminal charges for allegedly hitting a state trooper with his car near Sidney last weekend.

The grand jury in Shelby County wasted no time returning an indictment against 38-year-old Kurt Niekamp of Minster on charges of felonious assault on a police officer and fleeing.

Last weekend Niekamp was accused of striking Trooper Steve Tharp as Tharp found Niekamp’s car parked partially on Interstate 75 north of Sidney, troopers said.

State troopers said there was a 9-minute, 11-mile pursuit that ended near the Shelby Auglaize County line with Niekamp taken into custody.

If Niekamp is convicted as charged he could face a maximum of 15 years in prison and fines totaling $30,000.
