The initial investigation indicated that the victim, Mark A. Fennig, age 58, of 321 Race Street, Van Wert, a maintenance technician, was working on a water passage machine.
"It is unclear at this point exactly how Fennig became tangled in the machine, but his hard hat was knocked off and he had visible head trauma," according to Sheriff Jeff Grey.
Celina EMS transported Fennig to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Deputies contacted OSHA who is expected to investigate the death.
