Man sentenced for pawn shop shooting death

A second man convicted of murder in the shooting death of a Dayton pawn shop owner has been sentenced to prison.

Larry Baker, 28, of Detroit, Mich., was sentenced to the maximum, consecutive sentences of 36 years to life in prison. A jury found Baker guilty of murder, aggravated robbery and felonious assault earlier this month.

Baker is accused of attempting to rob the Cash To Go Pawn Shop at 3694 Salem Ave. with two other men, Anthony McClain and Dwayne Taylor, on Dec. 22, 2011. Store manager Ilya Golub, 53, and one of the would-be robbers, McClain, died of gunshot wounds.

Police said the three would-be robbers traveled from Detroit, Mich. to the pawn shop. Taylor pulled out a firearm and fatally shot Golub. Before Golub was fatally struck, he pulled out a gun and returned fire, shooting McClain, officials said.

The three fled without stealing anything, and while driving back to Michigan, McClain died from his injuries.

Taylor was also sentenced last month to 36 years to life in prison after being found guilty of murder, aggravated robbery, felonious assault and having weapons while under disability.

“These defendants came here from Michigan intending to commit a robbery of the pawn shop,” said Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck., Jr. “Tragically, their actions left two people dead. He has been convicted for not only the death of the pawn shop manager, but also the death of his associate. Under Ohio law, he is culpable for both deaths.”
