Man Stands On Roof While Yelling, Screaming At Officers

A 30-year-old man is behind bars at the Montgomery County Jail after police convinced him to leave the roof of a home in the 3400 block of East Fifth Street.

Officers said Jason Weikert stood on the roof of that house yelling, cussing and gesturing at them for a long period of time. He was apparently upset that officers were there to arrest him.

Police said Weikert had been drinking and that his actions endangered the safety of several people inside the home, including a couple of children that officers said were eight and nine years old, respectively.

Investigators said the incident began about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday with a report of someone damaging a car on Deeds Avenue in Dayton. Officers learned that Weikert was suspected of being involved and knew he sometimes stayed at the house on East Fifth Street.

The first patrol officers to pull up there spotted Weikert on the porch but say he ran inside the house and slammed the door behind him.

Police supervisors said a records check revealed that Weikert had an active arrest warrant for a parole violation involving weapons. They also said there was a warning that he is known to have weapons and had previous arrests for felonious assault and domestic violence. They decided to request backup and call in the SWAT team and hostage negotiators.

Negotiators did make phone contact with Weikert, who engaged them in conversations that occasionally rambled, according to police. Officers said he then came out on the roof of the home, gesturing, cursing and screaming at police.

Negotiators talked with him on the phone and by using a bullhorn. Meanwhile, officers carrying bullet-deflecting shields approached the front door in an attempt to get the children out of the house. They found that door locked so other officers then forced entry into the back of the home and escorted the children and Weikert's brother out of the house.

Eventually, Weikert took a negotiator's suggestion to go back in the house and stepped back through a window inside. Officers waiting there tried to arrest him but police said he did not want to be handcuffed. Officers used a Taser on Weikert, took him into custody and eventually walked him out the back of the home to a waiting cruiser.

Weikert's mother said she got a call about the problems with her son and rushed to the home. Lennie Weikert said that her son "knew he had a parole violation and was going to turn himself in because he knew he was going to be featured on the Miami Valley's Most Wanted this Thursday, so he was going to turn himself in before that but he got intoxicated and went off the hook."

Police booked Jason Weikert into jail for inducing panic and for the parole violation. They said that it was a federal arrest warrant and that United States Marshals were also looking for him. They'll talk with prosecutors about potential charges against him.

Police said one officer needed to be checked at the hospital after being cut on the hands and face when officers rushed in the house's back door to escort the children to safety. That officer is expected to be back on duty soon after treatment for the injuries.
