Middletown police said they believe three men broke into a Middletown home Tuesday night searching for drugs and money.

Police were called to the 400 block of McKinley Street around 7 p.m. on a report that the men broke into a home and assaulted two people, according to Middletown Police Lt. Scott Reeve.

A female resident told police she was about to lie down upstairs when she heard “yelling and tussling” downstairs. When she started to walk down the steps, one of the suspects grabbed her by the hair, forced her into a room and asked her about money, according to the police report.

He then took the woman downstairs, where two other suspects were assaulting a man who was in the home setting up an aquarium, the report said.

Then all four men — the three suspects and the man they were assaulting — left out the home’s back door.

The woman told police she locked the doors and called 911. The woman refused to be transported to Atrium Medical Center.

When the woman’s boyfriend returned home, he told police he was supposed to pay the man $100 to set up the aquarium.

Detectives collected blood and hair samples from the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
