Motorized Farm Weed Sprayer Rolls Into Reservoir

"Lucky" was the word used by Troy firefighter Dave Grigsby to describe a local farmer who rolled his motorized weed sprayer into a deep reservoir Sunday evening in Miami County.

It happened on property owned by Martin Marietta Aggregates at 250 Dye Mill Road, just south of the Troy city limits.

The farmer was heading for one of his farm fields with the sprayer topped off with 1,000 gallons of Round-Up weed killer and 80 gallons of diesel fuel to run his sprayer.

The farmer was able to quickly get himself out of the water before help arrived.

The Ohio EPA was called to the scene. Officials said they will wait until Monday morning to fish the sprayer out of 25 feet of water. Officials said they believe that very little of the chemical or fuel leaked from the vehicle.

The farmer apparently got to close to the edge of the road, which gave way, sending the sprayer tumbling into the water, said Grigsby.

The operater suffered only minor hand lacerations.
