Local veteran agencies get grant to fight homelessness

A more than $650,000 federal grant will be awarded locally to help pay for housing for homeless veterans.

St. Vincent de Paul Social Services Inc. will receive the money from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The money will pay to prevent homelessness among veterans or to find housing, according to the office of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

The funds also can cover expenses of health care, financial planning, child care, legal services, transportation and housing related counseling, according to Brown’s office.

The money will cover veterans’ housing-related needs in 12 counties in southwest Ohio, including Clark, Greene, Miami, Mercer and Montgomery.

It is part of the $14.3 million the VA will give to 15 Ohio organizations to combat homelessness among veterans, according to Brown’s office.

The VA had a goal to eliminate homelessness among veterans by the end of 2015. It did not meet that goal, but Secretary of the VA Robert McDonald said this week homelessness among veterans has declined by half since 2010.
