A 3-year-old boy was hospitalized Tuesday with non-life-threatening injuries after accidentally shooting himself at a Glendale home, authorities said.

According to police, the boy managed to get hold of a handgun in his home and it discharged, KSAZ reported. The incident occurred about 5:15 p.m. at an apartment complex, Glendale Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Tara Ochoa told the Arizona Republic.

“It’s a miracle that, where he shot himself, it was non-life-threatening,” Ochoa told the newspaper.

According to police, the weapon belonged to the boy's parents, KNXV reported.

Ochoa described the gun as being "unsecured" at the time the child took possession of it, the Republic reported. Ochoa said she did not know if anyone would be facing charges, the newspaper reported.
