Arkansas police officer shot, killed during traffic stop

An Arkansas police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Tuesday, authorities said.

According to KARK-TV, Hot Springs police Officer Brent Scrimshire and a suspect, who hasn't been publicly identified, were both wounded while exchanging fire about 6:30 p.m. following a Kenwood Street traffic stop, officials said.

Scrimshire later died at a nearby hospital, the Police Department said in a news release. The suspect's condition was not immediately available.

Arkansas State Police are investigating the incident, KARK reported.

"We ask for prayers for our officer and his family," Hot Springs police said in a statement.
