An attempted murder charge against a 9-year-old Florida boy accused of stabbing his 5-year-old sister multiple times earlier this year was dismissed Wednesday, WFTV reported.

Officials said the charge in Marion County was dismissed because the boy was deemed incompetent to stand trial.

Police said the boy stabbed his sister while she was wearing roller skates Jan. 25 at their home in Ocala.

According to police, the boy hid the knife behind his back, grabbed his sister by the back of her neck while she was bending over and began stabbing her, WFTV reported.

The boy said he stabbed her because he wanted to be able to go outside, a police report said.

Investigators said the boy told them he first thought about killing his sister two days earlier and was unable to get the thought out of his head.

The boy ran away after his mother took the knife from his hands, the woman told police.

Police said they found him hiding in a nearby maintenance shed shortly thereafter.

The girl survived the stabbing, WFTV reported.
