Coronavirus: Astros’ Alex Bregman helps hand out food at Houston distribution center

Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman pitched in to help distribute food to needy families.

Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman pitched in to help distribute food to needy families.

Alex Bregman plays third base, but the Houston Astros star was pitching in Saturday, wearing a mask and helping other volunteers serve fresh food.

Bregman was part of a crew that distributed food packages to about 500 people in an event organized by the St. Vincent de Paul Society in southeast Houston, KTRK reported.

“I’ve been inspired by people in Houston,” Bregman told the television station. “I love how Houston is hands-on helping each other.”

Bregman and his fiancee, Reagan Howard, have helped package meals before but wanted to make a face-to-face connection with people in need during the coronavirus pandemic, KTRK reported.

Normally there are 75 volunteers to help distribute food, but social distancing requirements forced the event’s organizers to reduce the number, the television station reported.

The food came from the Houston Food Bank, the television station reported.
