With the suggestion that Americans follow social distancing during the COVID-19 outbreak, some people are trying to figure out how to get their workout in without hitting the public gyms.

Before the outbreak, Shape and Self had compiled lists of essential equipment needed for a home gym setup.

Self said those who want a home gym setup need at least:

  • Exercise mat
  • Resistance bands
  • Kettlebells
  • Dumbells

Shape suggests also investing in the following equipment for a home gym:

  • Treadmill
  • Ab bench
  • Chin-up bar
  • Exercise ball
  • Foam roller

Men's Health takes it a step further for serious gym-goers:

  • Power cage or power tower
  • Battle ropes
  • Heavy bag
  • Weighted vest
  • Medicine balls
  • Pushup stands
  • Foam tiles
  • Stationary bike or smart spin bike
  • Ab wheel
  • Step platform

If you decide to forego the suggestion of social distancing and go to your local gym, you can lessen your exposure by going at off-peak hours, wiping off equipment before and after use, refraining from touching your face, washing your hands or using sanitizer, and finally, if you're sick, the workout can wait, according to Consumer Reports.
