"The public response was literally overwhelming," the fire department wrote in a Facebook post.
Among the donations were the masks the woman made, accompanied by a letter.
She wrote that her 27-year-old son, Lars, died in November 2017. Her son visited the fire station many times when he was young, the woman wrote.
“I never forget the kindness shown him,” she wrote. “I have no doubt the same spirit exists today.”
The woman said she kept her son's shirts to make a memory quilt but changed her mind when the pandemic hit, KOCO reported.
"I realized Lars would have much rather do something to help you," the women wrote on Facebook. "It would be my great honor if any of the masks can help protect you."
"This letter meant a great deal to our firefighters at that station, and it will mean a lot to our entire department as they read the letter," the fire department wrote on Facebook.
