Ortiz was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after the June 9 shooting in the Dominican Republic. He has since been moved out of the intensive care unit.
His wife, Tiffany Ortiz, said in a statement released Thursday by the Red Sox that he is "recovering from the surgery and is in good spirits."
Tiffany Ortiz thanked those who have helped the family and shown support during her husband's recovery.
The full statement reads:
"Earlier this week, David underwent a third surgery for complications resulting from his gunshot wound. The operation was performed by Dr. David King at Massachusetts General Hospital. David is recovering well and is in good spirits. We continue to be incredibly appreciative of the kindness and compassion shown to David and to our entire family during this difficult time."
David Ortiz was shot in the back at a bar in the Dominican Republic last month in what authorities described as a case of mistaken identity. More than a dozen people have been arrested as part of the investigation into the attack.
