The full moon comes two days after the lunar satellite reaches perigee, or the closest point to Earth in its orbit, according to Space.com.
Astrologer Richard Nolle is credited with coining the term "supermoon" in 1979, NASA said. A supermoon occurs when a new or full moon occurs within 90% of perigee.
The full moon in May was dubbed the "Flower Moon" by some Native American tribes during colonial times in the United States because of the large number of flowers that bloom during the month, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.
