Girl dies while playing with pistol at Georgia campsite, police say; grandmother, man charged

Deputies are investigating the death of a girl who they said shot herself while playing with a pistol at a Georgia campsite.

According to WSB-TV, the girl's grandmother and a man have been charged.

The Bartow County Sheriff's Department said deputies responded around 8:30 p.m. Saturday to reports of a shooting at the Chitwood Cove campsite.

People at the scene took the child from the site and met up with law enforcement and EMS nearby.

Officials rushed the girl to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The child’s name and age have not been released.

Deputies arrested and charged two people in connection with the girl’s death, including her grandmother.

Kimberly Roberts, 47, and James Lillie, 50, were booked in the Bartow County jail. Deputies said Lillie has no known relation to the child at this time.

Roberts is being held on a felony probation violation and Lillie was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. Both face additional charges.

This is the second shooting in a week where a child was accidentally killed while playing with a gun.

A 5-year-old found a gun in the woods and accidentally killed his 12-year-old brother in Spalding County. Griffin police arrested an alleged gang member in connection to the shooting.
