An Iowa man hit a co-worker repeatedly with a “dead blow” hammer Wednesday, police said.

Larry Alvin Crane Jr., 34, walked up to the co-worker and hit him in the back of the head with the specialized mallet around 10 p.m. at Greystone Manufacturing, KWQC reported.

Police said the victim fell to the ground, then Crane continued to hit him with the hammer. Crane then left work and went home, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, KWQC reported.

Police found Crane at home. He told investigators he hit the victim with closed fists in self-defense, KWQC reported. Crane denied using the hammer.

Crane was arrested and charged with willful injury causing serious injury and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, according to jail records. He is in jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Police have not recovered the hammer.
