A taxicab driver is being called a hero after he prevented an 83-year-old woman from being scammed out of $40,000, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office said.

Scott Kilmer was driving the woman to a bank Tuesday when he learned she was going to withdraw money to give to a man she did not know, KCCI reported.

“She was told that she had a relative out on the East Coast that was in dire straits, needed some money to help pay for an IRS bill,” Kilmer told the television station.

Kilmer immediately called the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.

"The IRS is not going to call you and demand payment like that," Lynn Hicks, a spokeswoman with the Iowa Attorney General's Office, told KCCI. "(Kilmer) just went above and beyond what he needed to do to save this woman from losing a lot of money."

Kilmer downplayed his helpful role.

"It took me a whole 10 minutes to do what I did," Kilmer told KCCI.
