An East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman told the Advocate the shooting took place after Batiste, 20, "answered a knock at the door and was met with gunfire," the newspaper said.
Bullets pierced the walls of Batiste's home and entered his neighbor's home, according to WBRZ. Two people inside that home, as well as three people inside Batiste's home, were uninjured.
Batiste died of his wounds at a hospital, the news station reported.
Johntrell Banks' arrest came 11 days after his father, Derrick Jermaine Banks, was booked into the same jail in connection with the 2018 killing of 34-year-old Antonio Sterling, WBRZ reported. According to the Advocate, Antonio Sterling was the cousin of Alton Sterling, the black man whose shooting death July 5, 2016, by two white Baton Rouge police officers was caught on video.
Alton Sterling’s killing sparked nationwide protests but resulted in no criminal charges against the officers involved.
Antonio Sterling, of St. Gabriel, was found dead in the back seat of a burning car April 11, 2018, in a vacant lot near Baton Rouge's City Park and a children's museum, the newspaper said. He had been shot before the car was set on fire.
The Advocate reported that Derrick Banks, 44, was in jail on unrelated charges Feb. 20 when he was served with an arrest warrant for murder.
Court records obtained by the newspaper indicate Antonio Sterling was shot and killed at a Baton Rouge tire shop several hours before his body was found inside his burning car. Video surveillance showed that the tire shop went up in flames about 24 hours later.
Despite the flames, police found blood evidence at the shop that investigators allege proves the killing happened there, the paper reported. Footage from the business' surveillance system also shows Antonio Sterling's white Mercedes leaving the property about 40 minutes before it was found burning.
Cellphone records showed Derrick Banks and his cousin, Kelvin Lee Phillips, were both at the tire shop the night Antonio Sterling died. Sterling called his brother a short time before his death and told him he was at the shop with the men and that his belongings had been stolen, the Advocate reported.
Phillips, who was renting the tire shop from its owner at the time of the homicide, has also been linked to the 2017 killing of Lorenzo Dixon, a local rapper who went by the stage name Zoe Realla, the newspaper reported. Authorities said Dixon's slaying was done at the behest of the ringleader of a drug trafficking group.
Phillips is accused of being the getaway driver in Dixon’s shooting.
WBRZ reported that the cases in which Johntrell Banks and Derrick Banks are charged do not appear to be related. Sheriff's Office officials said although both are being held at the parish jail, they are being held in separate areas.
Johntrell Banks will ultimately be transferred to a separate jail due to his age, the news station said.
