A man has been charged in the shooting of a 4-month-old in Indiana County, Pennsylvania State Police announced Friday.

The baby was shot on Feb. 1 inside an apartment on College Lodge Road in White Township.

James Williamson Sr., 21, is charged with aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure and endangering the welfare of children.

Investigators said Williamson was sitting on a couch when a shot fired from a handgun as he removed it from a holster on his hip. It is not believed that the shot was fired intentionally.

The bullet went through a couch cushion and then struck the baby, who was in a child safety seat on the floor near the couch, police said.

The baby was shot in the upper body and is continuing to receive treatment at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, police said. The baby is expected to survive.
