He said the man was taken to a hospital.
The shooting was not far from where Wayne State University Police Officer Collin Rose was shot and killed last year.
The two police officers, whose names have not been released, suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds, according to media reports.

Police have identified a person of interest in the shooting of two Detroit city officers.
According to media reports, 60-year-old Raymond Durham is the man they’re searching for.

FIRST REPORT
A gunman who is said to be dressed in a tan jacket and pants is being sought in the shooting of two Detroit police officers tonight, according to several media reports.
The conditions of the officers are not known. They have been taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital by police.
According to media reports, the incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. near I-96 and Martin Luther King, on the city's west side.
The suspect was last seen running from the area.
More than a dozen city police officers are on scene and Michigan State troopers have been dispatched. A police helicopter is in the area as well.
People living in the area of the shooting have been asked to shelter in place.
