Authorities in South Dakota had a wild chase on their hands Monday.

Police in Rapid City responded to a report of a civil altercation at 8 a.m., KEVN reported.

According to Rapid City Police Department spokesman Sgt. Craig Cassen, a 37-year-old woman left an apartment complex in a white SUV, the television station reported.

Believing the SUV was possibly a stolen vehicle, police used a spike strip at the complex, but it failed to fully disable it, KEVN reported.

The woman managed to take the SUV off-road and crashed through a fence onto the southbound lane of Interstate 190, according to the television station. She drove into oncoming traffic for a half-mile before crossing a median to head in the proper direction.

The woman traveled 10 miles on the highway before losing control of the SUV and crashing through a barbed-wire fence, KEVN reported. She maneuvered the vehicle behind a recreational vehicle store and crashed into the equipment before abandoning the SUV, the television station reported.

Authorities later found the woman hiding inside the battery compartment of one of the RVs, KEVN reported. She was arrested and charged with three counts of hit-and-run, aggravated eluding, driving on a suspended license and obstruction of justice, the television station reported.
