A couple, reflecting on their 50 years of marriage and eventual deaths, had just finished drinking cocktails on their outdoor deck when a large piece of ice slid off the roof and killed Linda Freedman Scharrenberg.

Scharrenberg, 73, was walking back into their home when she was hit in the back of the head Feb. 24 by the heavy piece of ice that suddenly fell from the roof knocking her face-first into the snow, the Caledonian Record reported.

Rescuers worked for nearly an hour to revive her. They determined that she would not have cognitive function even if she did wake up.

Scharrenberg and her husband had talked about their mortality moments prior.

Her husband said he hoped he died first.

“I don’t know how I would live without you,” he said.
