Neighbors react to Dairy Queen’s closure

Sometimes it takes is a warm holiday weekend for neighbors to discover their favorite local ice cream shop is no more.

That's the case for the Dairy Queen at 2613 S. Smithville Road in Dayton's Belmont neighborhood, where hand-lettered signs on the doors say simply, "Closed — out of business." Its absence became a hot topic on Facebook over the Memorial Day weekend starting Saturday May 27, that began with the lament of nearby resident and former customer, Shelly Hulce, who posted on her page, "Our beloved Belmont DQ is closed."

That prompted a flurry of responses, including, “What? This is very bad news!!” and “That’s sad! I go past there often but didn’t notice. I haven’t been there in years, so I’m probably part of the problem.”

An employee of Belmont Party Supply next door to the DQ confirmed the closure, saying the ice cream shop did not reopen this spring. And Belmont Party Supply owner Mike Schwartz jumped on the Facebook thread to say, “I own that building, and it’s for rent. It does not have to be rented as a DQ. I will help (financially) with the build-out.”

Meanwhile, those looking for their Dilly Bar fix will have to travel to the Shroyer Road location on the Dayton-Oakwood border, or to Kettering, Riverside or Beavercreek, to satisfy their craving.
